House rejects BI governor candidates
March 13th, 2008 | by Admin |After two days of intense interviews, a commission at the House of Representatives voted to reject both candidates for the position of Bank Indonesia (BI) governor.
The two candidates were Agus Martowardojo and Raden Pardede and had been proposed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The vote included 50 members of all 10 factions at the House commission XI overseeing financial affairs.
Twenty nine members voted to reject both candidates and 21 members chose Agus, the president director of state-owned Bank Mandiri.
No one chose Raden, currently the vice president of PT Perusahaan Pengelola Aset (PPA).
One commission member from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) did not attend the vote.
No official reasons were given behind the rejection, but some lawmakers have said Agus lacked the competency and proven credibility in monetary affairs.
They said Raden, who is a noted expert in fiscal and monetary affairs, did not have enough experience leading a major institution.
“The voting system was a closed one, so each commission XI member could make a decision, with their own reasoning, without any intervention from other members,” commission chairman Awal Kusumah told reporters after the voting.
Awal said the commission would submit results to a House plenary session, scheduled for March 18.
If the plenary agrees to the commission’s decision — which could also be decided through a voting system — the President must submit a list of new candidates.
Current BI governor Burhanuddin Abdullah ends his tenure on June 15.
