Kupang, Indonesia – A captain and five crew members are missing after a boat sank off Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province, an official said Wednesday.

The Anugerah Mulia sank at sea Tueday morning four days after setting sail from the East Timorese capital Dili for Kupang in West Timor, provincial welfare agency chief Filemon da Lopez told AFP.

“On the way, the ship started leaking after being struck by waves about five metres high,” Da Lopez said.

The Indonesian navy and the provincial search and rescue team were still looking for the missing crew, he said.

An archipelago nation of more than 17,000 islands, Indonesia is heavily reliant on sea links but is plagued by poor safety standards.
