Indonesian CSR Award urged to support micro and small entrepreneurs

May 16th, 2008 | by Indonesia First |

Jakarta - The Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises Ministry called on the Indonesian CSR Award organization to support the micro and small businesses managed by the women.
The appeal was made by Ir Agus Muharram MSP, Deputy Minister for Cooperatives, Small and Medium Entreprises in a discussion forum held at the Crowne Plaza hotel here on Thursday.
According to him, women are a strategic group in the context of micro and small business development. At least 40 million micro and small scale entrepreneurs in Indonesia were recorded in 2006, whereas 60 percent of businesses were run by women.
The result of a research by the Cooperatives, Small and Medium Entreprises Ministry also showed the provision of credits by women in the cooperative units and banks was quite good. Women were able to make use of their productive time 13 hours per day.
An increase in the income of women would have a positive effect on the economy of their families, while in reality women were often marginalized in life.
He added that women would be able to play a crucial role in improving their economy with a full participation in micro and small businesses as they make up a large part of the population in the country.
In view of this reality, it was time to make some efforts to help these businesswomen, whereas CSR fund could be allocated to help them set up micro and small businesses. The fund would be very useful, if it is used to empower those businesswomen.
By empowering them, so many benefits could be obtained in which they would be able to improve their social life, create jobs and eradicate poverty, he said.
Based on the latest data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, the number of those engaged in micro businesses reached 47 million, accounting for 96.6 percent of the total 48.9 million businesspeople in the country, and 3.6 percent or about 1.75 million people were small businesses, while 0,2 percent or 106.000 people in medium scale businesses.
Micro business group consisted of farmers, fishermen, workers in the sectors of forestry, plantation, mining and other informal sector. In this context, most micro businesses were run by women.
